Dieser Artikel informiert über Gletscher im Nationalpark Hohe Tauern in allen drei Bundesländern.

Allgemeines

Etwa 130 km² des Nationalparks sind derzeit vergletschert. Die 342 Gletscher sind mit allen Gletschertypen vertreten und allgegenwärtige, visuell herausragende Landschaftselemente.

Der tiefstherabreichende Gletscher ist das Boggeneikees, der vom Teufelsmühlkees gespeist wird. Er reicht bis auf 1 750 m ü. A. herab. Eine Besonderheit sind die 126 Blockgletscher, davon 67 aktive in der Schobergruppe, eine auffallende Erscheinung des alpinen Permafrostes.

Auch heute kann die landschaftsformende Wirkung der Gletscher beobachtet werden.

Größter Gletscher der Ostalpen

Die Pasterze ist mit ihrer einer Länge von 7,5 km und einer Fläche von 18,5 km² (Zahlen 2002) der größte Gletscher der Ostalpen. Sie ist ein herausragendes Beispiel für einen alpinen Talgletscher in dessen Umgebung eiszeitliche Landschaftsformen und alle biologischen Sukzessionsstufen der Wiederbesiedelung des Gletschervorfeldes zu beobachten sind. Von besonderer Bedeutung ist die riesige, in ihrem Vorfeld durch Frostverwitterung und Kalklösung aus Kalkglimmerschiefern entstandene periglaziale Sanderfläche.
