Mit Einladungen in die Wettbewerbe von 24 Filmfestivals rund um die Welt und fünf internationale Awards avanciert der Film zu Salzburgs international erfolgreichstem Kinofilm 2012/2013. Als einziger Salzburger Kinofilm schafft es Deserteur in die österreichischen Kinocharts 2015/2016.

Das Drehbuch schrieb Neudecker 2010, den Film drehte sie 2012 im Gemeindegebiet von [[Köstendorf]], u. a. beim [[Pragerfischer]] am [[Wallersee]].

Das Drehbuch schrieb Neudecker 2010, den Film drehte sie 2011 im Gemeindegebiet von [[Köstendorf]], u. a. beim [[Pragerfischer]] am [[Wallersee]]. 2012 wurde Neudeckers Film vom Französischen Frauenfilmfestival in Creteil (Paris) zur Weltpremiere eingeladen und zum Prix Anna Politkovskaja nominiert. Die Österreich-Premiere feierte der Film beim Crossing Europe Film Festival 2012, die Deutschland-Premiere beim Dok.Fest München 2012.

Im April 2013 wurde der Film beim 46. „''Worldfest Houston International Film Festival''“  unter dem Titel „Glorious Deserter!“ der englischsprachigen Fassung von der Jury in Houston mit dem Platinum-Award in der Kategorie „''Best Docu-Drama Independent Theatrical Features''“ ausgezeichnet.<ref>Quelle [https://salzburg.orf.at/news/stories/2581317/ salzburg.orf.at], abgefragt am 16. Juli 2018</ref> Es folgten noch weitere Auszeichnungen.

“The subject remains a taboo. Almost 65 years had to pass before Austria finally overturned the Nazi judgements in 2009 and deserters from the Wehrmacht were vindicated. The film takes us back to 1946/7, the Winter of Starvation in Salzburg. Scarred by traumatic wartime experiences and confronted by social exclusion, four young deserters – a cook, a farmer, an altar boy and a pig keeper - reveal to us the reasons behind their desertion. Successfully walking a tightrope between fiction and documentary, Gabriele Neudecker reveals touching insights into the forgotten victims of National Socialism and their ostracism after the war.
