In Österreich waren der Wahltag und die Vorwoche durch eine innenpolitische Krise geprägt, die mit dem Aufbrechen des „Ibiza-Skandals“ begann und am Tag nach der Wahl mit dem Sturz der Regierung Kurz ihren Höhepunkt erreichte. Diese Krise wirkte sich auch auf die Europawahl aus. Es wurde angenommen, dass sie zur hohen Wahlbeteiligung, zum großen Wahlsieg der ÖVP und zu der wenn auch glimpflichen Wahlniederlage der FPÖ beitrug.

=== Personen mit Salzburgbezug ===
[[Staatssekretär]]in Dr. [[Karoline Edtstadler]] kandidierte für die ÖVP auf dem zweiten Listenplatz. Da nach einer parteiinternen Regelung für den Einzug in das Europäische Parlament nicht die Reihung der Wahlliste, sondern die Zahl der Vorzugsstimmen entscheidend war, fand zwischen den ÖVP-Kandidaten ein Vorzugsstimmenwahlkampf statt. Diesen gewann Edtstadler überlegen.
Kein Glück hatte der ehemalige [[grüne]] Europaabgeordnete [[Johannes Voggenhuber]], Zugpferd der [[Liste Peter Pilz|Pilz]]-nahen Liste „EUROPA Jetzt – Initiative Johannes Voggenhuber“. Er verfehlte den Einzug in das Europäische Parlament klar, selbst in seiner Heimatstadt Salzburg erzielte seine Liste nur 1,73 % der Stimmen.
